Finished size: approx. 20* x 14* (*for larger pad see below)
Materials: Worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarn scraps
Size J hook (or size to get gauge)

Gauge:In single crochet (sc) cluster pattern,10 sc = 4*, 6 rows = 2*

Repeat Row 1 until pad measures 14* (or desired measurement) from beginning, changing colors at random for stripe pattern. (Note: When cutting off or joining new colors leave long 6" tails. Either work over old/new tail ends on next row by holding strands along top of next row and working sc clusters over them, or weave tails in securely with a yarn needle later, so ends won*t come loose during use or washing.)
Edging:
Rnd 1: With choice of color, attach yarn to center of one side, ch 1, sc evenly around entire pad, working 3 sc in ea corner so pad lays flat. Join with slip st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, work in reverse sc (working from left to right) evenly around pad, join with sl st. Fasten off and weave in all ends securely.

*For a larger pad, ch 75 to 100 and work in pattern until desired measurement.
Variations: Instead of single crochet, work stitch pattern in half double or double crochet, and work edging round in plain half double or double crochet, omitting reverse single crochet round.

CHUNKY STRIPE SCARF

(adult & child versions)

Stitch sequence is the same for both adult and child scarves -- the child size scarf is shorter and narrower.

NOTE:  You will be working one row in each of 3 different colors, so carry unused yarns loosely up side of work.  Do not cut unused yarn until instructed to do so.

ADULT VERSION: approx. 6" wide x 52" long

Gauge: 10 dc = 4" on size J hook

Materials:  I used handspun wool for the original scarf in 3 different colors.  Yarn weights were in the heavy worsted to chunky range.  You may use any chunky-weight yarn of your choice.  You need about 150 yds. each of 3 different colors & a size J hook.

Ch 129, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (125 dc)

At end of foundation row, drop Color A (do not cut it but carry colors loosely up side of work) and pick up Color B.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 1:  Working in back loop only, sc in ea dc across row.  At end of row, drop Color B (do not cut but carry loosely up side of work), pick up Color C.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 2:  Working in BLO, sc in ea sc across row.  At end of row, drop Color C, pick up Color A.  Ch 3, turn.

Row 3:  Working in BLO, dc in ea sc across row.  At end of row, drop Color A, pick up Color B.  Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Rows 1-3, changing color each row while carrying unused color up side of work, until you have a total of 13 rows, including the foundation row.

Drop Color A and pick up Color B, ch 1, turn.  (At this point you may cut Colors A and C, leaving a 6" length for weaving in.)

Working in BOTH loops around entire edge of scarf, sc in ea st around, working 1 sc in each row at scarf ends, working 3 sc in ea corner and encasing the loosely-carried strands inside the sc stitches to hide them.  Slip st to first sc, fasten off and weave in ends.

Give the scarf a pull at both ends to straighten stitches.

CHILD VERSION: approx. 4" wide x 44" long

Gauge: 10 dc = 4" on size J hook

Materials: Lion Brand Chunky USA yarn - 1 skein each of  3 colors of your choice & a size J hook

Follow instructions for Adult scarf above, but start with 100 dc and work only 7 rows total, including foundation row.

Foundation row:  With size J hook, chain 104, dc in 4th st from hook and ea ch across (to end up with 100 dc)

Repeat Rows 1-3 twice to end up with 7 rows total, including the foundation row.

Work sc border as in Adult scarf, finish off, weave in ends.
