C’s BIRTHDAY SCARF
Skill level: Intermediate
Size: Approximately 8” wide x 57” long
Materials:
440 yds. soft, brushed worsted weight (4) yarn
Sample shown in Plymouth Yarns “Baby Alpaca Brush” (80% Baby Alpaca, 20% Acrylic, 110 yds/50g ball)
Pair of size 10 US (6 mm) knitting needles – or size needed to achieve gauge
Spare size 10 US (6 mm) knitting needle (for 3-needle bind off)

Gauge: 12 sts & 20 rows = 4" in seed stitch on size 10 US (6 mm) needles
Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cable 4 front (C4F), cable 4 back (C4B), cast on (CO), established (est), knit (k), place marker (pm), purl (p), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), stitch (st), together (tog)
Pattern notes: Scarf is worked in two identical halves from cast-on edge to center back neck, then halves are joined with 3-needle bind off.
Six stitches at each edge of scarf are maintained in seed stitch throughout, to form borders.
If desired, use stitch markers as a visual aid to keeping your place in pattern. Place markers on Row 1 and slip them every row thereafter.
A row counter is useful for keeping track of rows in pattern.

Seed stitch:
Row 1: *K1, p1, rep from * as instructed in pattern.
Row 2: Knit the purl stitches and purl the knit stitches as they face you.
Rep Row 2 for seed stitch.
Cable 4 front (C4F): Slip next 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, knit next 2 sts on left needle, knit 2 sts from cable needle.
Cable 4 back (C4B): Slip next 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back of work, knit next 2 sts on left needle, knit 2 sts from cable needle.

Row 2 (WS): Seed st over 6 sts of border; k2, p4, k2; seed st over next 7 sts; k2, p4, k2; seed st over 6 sts of border.
Row 3 (cable row): Seed st 6; p2, C4B, p2; seed st 7; p2, C4F, p2; seed st 6.
Row 4: Seed st 6; k2, p4, k2; seed st 7; k2, p4, k2; seed st 6.

Second half of scarf: Rep instructions for first half of scarf.
Finishing:
Join halves of scarf with 3-needle bind off as follows:
Place sts from holder on one needle, place sts from second holder on another needle. Hold pieces with right sides together and use a third needle to bind off through stitches of both thicknesses.
Weave in all tails.
